Are you Experiencing Hair Thinning or Loss?

This is one of the biggest concerns of many women today. My focus will be on women in this article because even though men have the same concerns wouldn’t you agree that men shaving their heads because of drastic hair loss becomes a solution in their case in can be very attractive for men. For women it involves their self-esteem, identity, and cultural significance. There are many reasons that hair damage or loss happens, but we are going to focus first on Things to Avoid and Deficiencies. There are other reasons such as hormones and thyroid imbalances that will be covered in a future article. In this article I’m going to focus on possible cases of thinning and loss, ways to stop thinning and help hair regrowth. First let’s focus on shampoos that you may be using currently.

1. Did you know that many shampoos that are very popular contain “SLES”, or Sodium Laureth Sulfate or “SLS” Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, which can be toxic and harmful. What are SLES and SLS? They’re commonly used as a surfactant and foaming agent used to create lather and effectively clean. Manufacturers often use SLES and SLS because they’re an inexpensive option for these purposes. Shampoos using either of these agents can cause an allergic reaction, hair thinning, damage causing dry brittle hair which will increase breakage, scalp irritation that can damage the hair follicle that will contribute to hair loss. SLES potentially breaks down keratin a protein that makes up the hair, making the hair weaker. Note these same agents are used by manufacturers in household cleaning agents.

Solution? Purchase Shampoos and hair rinses free from these agents, or sulfate free.

2. Protein added to shampoos isn’t directly known to cause hair damage or loss, but overusing protein hair products can lead to an overload which will damage hair and potentially contribute to stiff, brittle hair that’s prone to breakage thus thinning hair. Our hair is made of Protein, and at times can be used in a treatment to help damaged hair, but using shampoos daily with protein can lead to protein build up on hair shaft causing breakage.

Solution? Avoid regular use of hair products with added protein.

3. Vitamin Deficiency can cause hair loss. Vitamin D, Biotin, Iron, Zinc and B-12 Methyl will affect your hair health. What does each of these nutrients contribute to a healthy head of hair? Vitamin D deficiency can disrupt the hair growth cycle, leading to hair shedding and thinning. Biotin or B7 plays a crucial role in hair growth, a deficiency can cause hair loss and shedding. Iron deficiency can cause premature hair loss.

Zinc is essential for cell division and protein production, both essential for hair growth. B-12 methyl deficiency can disrupt normal follicle function and cause excessive hair shedding.

Solution? A Multivitamin with a small amount of Iron, Sublingual Methyl B-12, and a healthy supplement that contains Biotin

I use Marine Collagen for my hair and added extra bonus for skin.
